External battery is not working

Search Help Articles

If your external battery is not working, please follow these troubleshooting steps. Please note, this troubleshooting guide assumes you have tested another power source like an AC Adaptor and confirmed it’s working perfectly:

  1. Ensure that the red three-way master switch located under the machine is set to II for external power. If your machine has a black two-way master switch, it is unlikely that your machine has been set up for external power.
  2. If your battery was working but the play time decreased with each use until such time as you are experiencing very little or no play time, it is likely the battery itself is “dead”. You should replace it. You can test this further by checking the voltage of the battery after fully charging it (using a multimeter). A reading of 12.7V or higher is healthy. The machine will not turn on when the voltage is below 10.8V. Please contact your local distributor about how to replace an internal battery (an external battery should be self-explanatory). Our batteries come with a 6-month warranty. The battery specifications are 12V, 20AH, 181.5mm (L) x 77mm (W) x 167mm (H). The weight should be approximately 6-7 kg and the terminal type is T3. These are a common battery and should be available locally.
  3. Please check if the fuse in the external battery cable has “blown” and replace it if necessary. To check the fuse just pull off the plastic fuse cap (you may need pliers as they are on quite tight) and shine a light on the fuse. You should be able to see if the filament is still intact. You may also want to pull out the fuse entirely to check. If you need to purchase a replacement locally (from an auto supply or electronics store), it’s a 32V 15A mini-fuse. You may find a spare fuse inside your external battery bag.
  4. Please check that the fuse end of the cable that is on the red wire is attached to the red (+) terminal of the battery. You may have to remove a bit of the electrical tape to check. The area around the terminal is red and there is a ‘+’ sign embossed beside it. The other wire should, of course, be attached to the black (-) terminal.
  5. Replacing a new external battery cable should fix the problem if the solder joints on the battery cable (female and male XLR) are broken.

If none of the above has allowed you to identify the problem, we recommend you contact your local Spinfire distributor to discuss returning your machine for evaluation and repair.
